FreeFlyer provides robust capabilities for modeling both RF (radio frequency) and optical communications. While both types of links share a common structure involving transmitters, receivers, and link budget calculations, they differ significantly in terms of wavelength, signal propagation behavior, and environmental sensitivity. RF communications use longer wavelengths and are more resilient to atmospheric conditions, whereas optical communications utilize laser-based transmissions that offer higher data rates but are more susceptible to weather-induced attenuation and require precise pointing.
