Flight Dynamics as a Service (FDaaS)

Webinar September 25, 2024

Event Background

As space missions grow in complexity, the need for advanced computational capabilities has significantly increased. Modern flight dynamics, involving tasks such as planning maneuvers, predicting ephemerides, and calculating eclipse timings, demand extensive computing power, sometimes taking hours even with cutting-edge hardware. This challenge escalates when dealing with constellations of hundreds of spacecraft or computing numerous cislunar abort trajectories, each requiring detailed calculation and evaluation. To address these demands, flight dynamics systems are increasingly utilizing cloud computing, offering enhanced computational and storage capacities. However, integrating legacy software into such scalable environments presents challenges, including the need for substantial modernization efforts and the collaboration between different teams specialized in algorithm development and cloud-based platform engineering.
