On June 22, 2017, a.i. solutions’ Sean Phillips will be showcasing the company’s Deep Space Trajectory Explorer (DSTE) during his Keynote address at the Oracle Code in Atlanta, GA. Below is the abstract for his presentation followed by a few videos highlighting the explorer tool’s capabilities.
Humanity is entering a new age of space exploration focusing beyond Earth orbit. Deep space mission design organizations such as NASA face new mission goals with complex custom computing and visualization requirements. Modern software and computing platforms will enable these intricate workflows.
During the presentation, the complexities of trajectory design within deep space regimes will be discussed. Examples range from missions to liquid-rich worlds such as Europa and Enceladus, but also excursion missions to the Lunar surface from the planned orbiting human habitat.
Science orbits in these vicinities involve significant computational challenges, due to complex gravitational effects. Demonstrations will include the Deep Space Trajectory Explorer (DSTE), software designed for modern high performance multicore platforms, providing a rapid parallel search and filtration capabilities. Custom hardware-accelerated visualizations are used to visually identify trajectory solutions that exploit these dense gravity fields. The DSTE immerses the user within the design space, letting the data be the interface to the user. Data visualizations will feature a mix of custom multilayered 2D plots and interactive 3D tools.

The DSTE is a JavaFX application that uses the Java 8 streaming, JavaFX 3D and Canvas techniques to visually design trajectories in any Planetary-Moon system.
Using the Deep Space Trajectory Explorer JavaFX tool we can rapidly and casually explore alternatives with the trajectory design space of the Jupiter and Europa system. This video provides a explanation of the underlying data space that the DSTE uses, why it is effective and how software tools were design to make this possible.
Alternative use cases include Periodic trajectories that provide complete Equatorial coverage of Europa to Purely ballistic trajectories providing Europan South Pole low altitude fly-bys.
